Billy Joel’s Daughter Shares Promising Health Update Amid Battle
Legendary musician Billy Joel is making strides in his health recovery as his daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, shares an optimistic update. The 76-year-old singer, known for hits like “Piano Man,” was previously diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder that led him to cancel all concerts last May. As he continues to focus on his health, his family remains hopeful for his return to the stage.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alexa Ray revealed that her father remains in good spirits and is committed to his recovery. “He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet,” she stated. This positive outlook comes months after the announcement of his diagnosis, which raised concerns among fans and the music community.
Emotional Tribute at Carnegie Hall
The family gathered at Carnegie Hall on March 12, 2026, for “The Music of Billy Joel,” a tribute event that brought together numerous artists to celebrate his contributions to music. Alexa Ray expressed the significance of the occasion, noting, “He was so excited when he first played Carnegie Hall in the ‘70s, so it’s exciting for him to come back decades later and see amazing artists and his daughter pay tribute to him.”
She emphasized the importance of her father’s attendance, insisting, “I said, ‘Dad, you better be there! This is Carnegie Hall. Everyone’s paying tribute to you, and it’s an amazing group of artists.'” Joel, always organized, made sure to mark the date in his calendar.
During the event, Alexa Ray honored her father with a heartfelt performance while he looked dapper in a black suit and tie. The sold-out concert, which celebrated his extensive catalog, attracted more than 3,500 attendees and raised over $225,000 for music education programs, marking the largest fundraising total in the concert’s history.
Addressing Health Concerns
Last July, Billy Joel reassured fans about his health, acknowledging their worries following his diagnosis. “I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m OK,” he told People. He described NPH as something that not many people understand, including himself. Despite the challenges, he expressed determination to work through the diagnosis, stating, “I’m doing my best to work with it and to recover from it.”
While admitting that the diagnosis was “disturbing,” he urged fans not to worry excessively, saying, “It was scary, but I’m OK. I just wanted to let people know, don’t worry about me being deathly ill or anything.”
Billy Joel, who shares three daughters—including Alexa Ray with ex-wife Christie Brinkley and two daughters, Della Rose and Remy Anne, with current wife Alexis Roderick, continues to inspire those around him with his resilience and commitment to recovery. As the music world awaits his full return, the support from his family and fans remains unwavering.
