The future of the “Blue Beetle” franchise appears to be bright, as key figures involved in the film express optimism about a potential sequel. Despite the film’s modest box office performance, DC Studios chief James Gunn has indicated that Xolo Mariduena’s character, Jaime Reyes, may transition into the new DC Universe.

During a promotional event for NBC’s “Happy Place,” actress Belissa Escobedo, who portrays Jaime’s younger sister, Milagro Reyes, shared insights about ongoing discussions regarding a follow-up. She stated, “Oh, absolutely. That’s totally in the works and in talks. So hopefully that’s happening soon. I’m gonna see Xolo [Mariduena] soon. We’re going to do a Comic-Con together.” Her enthusiasm suggests that fans may not have to wait long for updates on the franchise’s future.

The film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto, also addressed the potential for a sequel in a recent interview with The Direct. He confirmed, “Yeah, there have been conversations, and that’s all I can say. I mean, that’s fair. Conversations have been happening, and there’s definitely… James [Gunn] has been very vocal about keeping Blue Beetle in the DCU. So good things are coming for Jaime Reyes and his family.” This statement reinforces the notion that plans are in motion, although specifics remain under wraps.

Animated Series in Development

In addition to the discussions surrounding a sequel, there are reports of an animated series based on “Blue Beetle” currently in development. News surfaced in mid-2024 that Miguel Puga, known for his work on “The Casagrandes,” will serve as showrunner, with Cristian Martinez as the writer. Both Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will take on producer roles for this new project. This expansion into animation may signal a broader commitment to the character and the narrative surrounding him.

As the excitement builds within the cast and crew, fans remain hopeful for further announcements from DC Studios. With Gunn’s commitment to integrating Blue Beetle into the evolving DC Universe, it seems that Jaime Reyes’s story may continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
