CBS News Seeks Bret Baier from Fox for Evening News Anchor Role

CBS News is reportedly in discussions to recruit Bret Baier from Fox News to lead its flagship program, “CBS Evening News.” This potential move, spearheaded by Bari Weiss, the newly appointed editor in chief, has generated considerable buzz on social media, even if it may face significant challenges due to Baier’s existing contract with Fox.

According to media analyst Oliver Darcy, Weiss is exploring various talent options to revitalize CBS News, which has struggled to keep pace with its competitors. Baier, who currently hosts “Special Report with Bret Baier,” earns around $14 million annually at Fox and recently extended his contract through 2028. This financial commitment complicates any potential transition to CBS, which currently ranks last among the major network news programs.

Baier has built a reputation as a credible and balanced journalist since he joined Fox News in 1998. His reporting style contrasts sharply with CBS News, which has often been perceived as leaning left politically. For instance, during the 2020 presidential campaign, Baier’s interview with then-Democratic nominee Kamala Harris garnered attention for its straightforward approach. In contrast, CBS News faced criticism for its handling of an interview segment on “60 Minutes” that appeared to favor Harris.

The prospect of Baier joining CBS could represent a significant shift within the network, which has faced scrutiny following past controversies, including a 2004 incident where it aired misleading documents related to the military service of then-President George W.
