Disney Confirms Development of Moana 3 with Exciting Updates
News regarding the animated sequel, Moana 3, has emerged, confirming that Disney is actively working on the project. This development follows the success of Moana 2, which premiered in 2024, and takes place alongside the upcoming live-action remake of the original film set for release on July 10, 2026.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the animation studio is moving forward with Moana 3. This marks the first significant update on the franchise since the release of Moana 2, which grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and remains the most-watched title on Disney+.
The anticipation surrounding Moana continues to grow as Disney expands the property. The live-action remake will feature Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, while Catherine Laga‘aia has been cast as Moana.
Potential Storylines and Creative Direction
Director David Derrick Jr. has hinted at the possibilities for Moana 3, emphasizing the “untapped potential” of Moana’s new demigod status. He suggested that the upcoming film might revisit the post-credits scene from Moana 2, which teased the return of antagonists Matangi and Nalo.
Traditionally, Walt Disney Animation Studios takes six years or more to develop sequels, often prioritizing original stories. While the studio has moved more swiftly on Moana 3 compared to its predecessor—Moana 2 debuted eight years after the original—completion of the new film may still be several years away, potentially arriving in 2029 or 2030.
As of now, Disney has not confirmed any casting details for Moana 3. While Auliʻi Cravalho is expected to return as the voice of Moana, the live-action adaptation will feature a new actress in the role. The studio has yet to announce a release window or production schedule for the animated sequel.
The ongoing development of Moana 3 highlights Disney’s commitment to the franchise and its characters, ensuring that fans can continue to engage with the beloved story in new and exciting ways.
