Meghan Markle Hesitant to Visit Father After Emergency Surgery
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is reportedly hesitant to visit her ailing father, Thomas Markle, who recently underwent an emergency lower leg amputation on December 3, 2023. Mr. Markle is currently recuperating in a hospital in the Philippines, where he has been living for several months. Concerns about paparazzi intrusion are a significant factor in her decision to remain distant.
According to royal expert Emily Andrews, writing for Woman & Home magazine, Meghan’s relationship with her father has deteriorated over the years. Once very close, their bond began to fray after Thomas cooperated with paparazzi for staged photographs in 2018 and subsequently misled Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, about it. The estrangement has deepened, especially as Thomas has never met his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4.
Sources close to Meghan indicate that she currently has no plans to reach out to her father directly, fearing that their conversation may not remain private. Despite this, a spokesperson for the duchess confirmed that she had sent a letter to Thomas at the hospital following his public pleas for contact. According to the spokesperson, “There are a couple of reporters stalking the hospital where her father is convalescing. A reunion under the eyes of British paparazzi did not appeal to her.”
The logistics of a visit also present challenges. Traveling commercially is unappealing to Meghan, and chartering a private jet to the Philippines could cost approximately $175,000 each way. This financial burden adds to her reluctance to make the journey, especially given the fraught nature of their relationship.
In the wake of Thomas’s health crisis, Meghan’s apprehensions reflect a broader concern about privacy and family dynamics that have played out in the public eye. The ongoing scrutiny from the media only complicates an already delicate situation, as both father and daughter navigate their estrangement amid personal and public pressures.
