New Dinosaur Superhero Show Armorsaurs Pays Homage to Classic Cartoons
A new animated series, titled Armorsaurs, is set to captivate a fresh audience of young viewers while paying tribute to the beloved cartoons of the 1980s and 1990s. Produced by Kevin Yi, the show combines elements of dinosaur mayhem with superhero action, all while emphasizing relatable themes that resonate with modern children and their families.
In an interview with ComicBook, Yi, along with cast members Jailen Bates, Avianna Mynhier, and Sade Louise, discussed the creative vision behind Armorsaurs. Yi expressed a desire to create a series that not only entertains but also fosters a sense of sincerity and connection among its characters. “We’re definitely paying homage to those things,” Yi stated, referring to the classic shows from his childhood. “If you watch really, really carefully, there’s definitely some analogues that you can see as you watch the season.”
The heart of the show lies in its diverse and evolving cast of heroes. While the visuals showcase superpowers and armored dinosaurs, the narrative focuses on the characters’ personal journeys and interpersonal relationships. Yi noted, “One of the best parts about a show like this is we’re also bringing back a sincerity. There’s a genuineness to the way that the teens talk to each other.”
Addressing Modern Challenges with Humor and Heart
“I think kids can fall into cynicism because the world is a scary place, and so we want it to be something a little bit refreshing,” said Yi.
The series introduces complex themes such as anxiety, judgment, and overcoming fears, encouraging discussions between parents and their children. Mynhier, who portrays the character Paloma, emphasized the importance of acknowledging children’s intelligence in storytelling. “I really only wanted to be involved in a kids’ show that acknowledged kids’ intelligence,” she remarked. Her character, initially presented as a fashionable and sarcastic teen, evolves throughout the series, showcasing her innate capabilities and depth.
Bates, who plays the character Liam, highlighted the emotional journey his character undergoes. “It was such a unique challenge to find the sincerity within Liam and his emotional depth,” he explained. This focus on character development is central to the series, making it accessible and engaging for a wide age range.
The production team is committed to ensuring that Armorsaurs does not talk down to its young audience. “Children are incredibly smart and quite perceptive,” Yi noted, emphasizing the importance of crafting narratives that resonate with their experiences. This approach is reflected in the show’s writing, which balances lighthearted dialogue with significant themes.
A New Era of Representation
Another crucial aspect of Armorsaurs is its commitment to representation. Louise, who plays Prisca, remarked on the importance of showcasing female superheroes. “I think that is such an incredibly important thing for both little girls and little boys to grow up seeing,” she stated. The series presents multifaceted characters who embody various forms of strength, allowing young viewers to see themselves reflected on screen.
The genesis of Armorsaurs stems from Yi’s desire to combine elements that resonate with children—dinosaurs, robots, and action-packed adventures. “What do boys love? Dinosaurs, robots, and cars,” Yi recalled. He explained that the show’s original Korean version served as a foundation, from which they aimed to create a family-friendly narrative accessible to a global audience.
Yi concluded by emphasizing the importance of storytelling in Armorsaurs. “At the end of the day, if you’re not sitting with the stories and you’re not in love with the actual characters themselves, I think eventually we’ll lose you,” he said. With its vibrant visuals and compelling narratives, Armorsaurs is poised to make a significant impact on children’s programming, reminding viewers of the value of connection and authenticity in storytelling.
