Ranking the 5 Worst Dungeons & Dragons Video Games Ever Made
The world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has produced some iconic role-playing games (RPGs) over the years, but not every title has achieved success. As of today, there have been over 100 D&D video games since the tabletop role-playing game began in 1974. While titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Neverwinter Nights have earned acclaim, several entries in the franchise have been met with criticism and disappointment. Here is a look at the five worst Dungeons & Dragons video games of all time.
5) Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft
Released in 1996, Iron & Blood: Warriors of Ravenloft is often cited as one of the poorest D&D games. This 3D fighting game, set in the beloved Ravenloft universe, failed to resonate with players. Unlike traditional RPGs, it was designed as a brawler, reminiscent of titles like Street Fighter. Unfortunately, players criticized its clunky controls, subpar voice acting, and confusing camera angles. Although it predated the era of review aggregators, its reputation as a failure endures.
4) Dungeons & Dragons Tactics
In 2007, Dungeons & Dragons Tactics was launched for the PlayStation Portable (PSP), aiming to capture the tactical RPG experience. Using the D&D 3.5 Edition ruleset, it allowed players to create custom characters or select from pre-generated ones. Despite some praise from dedicated fans for adhering closely to D&D rules, the game faced criticism for its rigid mechanics and cumbersome user interface. It received a Metascore of 58, which, while not the worst, signals a lack of enthusiasm compared to more successful titles.
3) Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder
The 2002 release of Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder for the Game Boy Advance attempted to offer players an old-school dungeon crawl experience. However, it was constrained by its limited graphics and gameplay that many found convoluted. With only four available classes, it struggled to engage players fully. The game garnered a Metascore of 57, with a slightly better user rating of 7.6. Ultimately, it did not capture a significant audience, leaving its impact largely unnoticed.
2) Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance
The 2021 release of Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance aimed to build on the legacy of its predecessor, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. Regrettably, it fell short of expectations, receiving a Metacritic rating of 53 from critics and a dismal 3.1 from users. The game’s limited roster of playable characters, alongside numerous launch-day bugs and uninspiring combat mechanics, contributed to its downfall. The title was ultimately delisted in 2025, signaling its poor commercial performance.
1) Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale
Crowning the list is Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale, released in 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. With a Metascore of just 46, it holds the title of the lowest-rated D&D game. Attempting to deliver a hack-and-slash experience in a co-op format, it failed to engage players. Criticism focused on its lack of character options, weak storytelling, and technical issues. While some players appreciated its cooperative gameplay, it ultimately earned a Mostly Negative rating on Steam, reflecting widespread disappointment.
These five titles illustrate that not every Dungeons & Dragons game has been a success. Despite the franchise’s rich history and enthusiastic fanbase, these games serve as reminders that translating the beloved tabletop experience into video game form can be a challenging endeavor. As the D&D universe continues to evolve, players remain hopeful for future titles that honor the legacy while delivering engaging gameplay.
