Remembering Richard Capra: A Life Filled with Love and Legacy
Richard Eugene Capra, a beloved figure known for his vibrant personality and dedication to family and community, passed away in 2025 at the age of 68. Born in 1956 in San Francisco to a yodeler and an Alaskan Pipeline worker, his life was anything but ordinary. Capra’s journey was marked by love, adventure, and an enduring passion for music, leaving behind a legacy that resonates with all who knew him.
Growing up in Hunters Point, Richard experienced a close-knit community where neighbors shared meals on weekends. A standout linebacker at Woodrow Wilson High School, he earned the nickname “Cool Cap.” His love for music blossomed early; he transformed his bedroom into a makeshift studio, where he played drums for hours. Eventually, he acquired an eight-piece Ludwig drum kit, which he transported to iconic venues throughout San Francisco. As a member of the power-pop band Gypsy Dream, he contributed dramatic fills and backup vocals to their acclaimed 1979 track, “Heart’s Desire.”
A pivotal moment in Richard’s life occurred at a local Baskin-Robbins when he offered a Sicilian-American counter girl named Marlene tickets to see the Rolling Stones. This encounter sparked a love story that would last for over four decades. The couple danced through the vibrant San Francisco disco scene, frequented the Geneva Drive-In movie theatre, and eventually married at the Church of the Epiphany in the Excelsior neighborhood. They settled in San Rafael and raised three children, all while continuing to celebrate their love for life and each other.
Fatherhood was Richard’s proudest role. He was affectionately known as the “fun T-ball coach,” famous for his elaborate school dioramas and a loud presence at his children’s events. Richard’s enthusiasm was infectious; he often changed out of work clothes to participate in backyard basketball games or engage in pool noodle fights. He frequently expressed pride in his children, emphasizing how much he loved them.
Richard’s professional journey mirrored his personal passions. He dedicated 28 years to UC San Francisco, rising from a radiology technician to the Chief Administrative Officer of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Under his leadership, UCSF Orthopaedics earned recognition as one of the nation’s most esteemed departments. His contributions were acknowledged with the prestigious UC Chancellor’s Award. He played a crucial role in launching the Marin Heart and Cancer Care Institutes at Marin General Hospital and served as President of the Academic Orthopaedic Consortium, prioritizing patient care and the success of his colleagues over accolades.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marlene; his children, Andrew (Monique), Olivia, and Gregory (Sarah); his sisters, Pauline “Babe” Rispoli and Darlene “Raye” Capra; and an expansive network of friends, including cycling companions and workout partners. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Anita Capra, and his sister, Charlene “Gay” Joachim.
In honoring Richard’s memory, his family encourages everyone to embrace life as he did. In lieu of flowers, they suggest enjoying a Mai Tai, dancing with a loved one, or befriending a stranger. Richard Eugene Capra’s legacy will undoubtedly endure through the love and laughter he shared with those around him.
