Rob Zombie’s Art Exhibition Provokes at Morrison Gallery
Rob Zombie has unveiled his first visual art exhibition, titled “What Lurks on Channel X?”, at the Morrison Gallery in Kent, Connecticut. The exhibit features 18 striking paintings and will be on display until November 16, 2023, showcasing Zombie’s unique perspective on pop culture and societal themes.
The Morrison Gallery, located in a quaint town with a population of approximately 3,000, provides a striking backdrop for Zombie’s vibrant and provocative works. The gallery’s spacious and serene atmosphere contrasts sharply with the boldness of Zombie’s art, which is known for its loud colors and dynamic imagery.
Many of Zombie’s pieces are considerably large, with some measuring 6 feet by 10 feet. They are presented without glass frames, enhancing their visceral impact. The exhibition has generated local excitement, especially since Zombie himself attended the opening reception, which took place just before Halloween.
Zombie, who initially studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, has established a multifaceted career as a musician, filmmaker, and now artist. Known for his heavy metal music, he has released eight solo albums and four with the band White Zombie. His film credits include notable works such as “House of 1000 Corpses” and the 2007 reboot of “Halloween.” Despite his celebrity status, the artworks stand on their own merit, each offering a unique commentary on various elements of culture, crime, and horror.
In a statement regarding his artistic journey, Zombie shared, “I loved painting but school made me hate it. So I stopped, but in the past 10 years I rediscovered my love of it once again.” The paintings in this exhibit were created between 2012 and 2020, displaying a cohesive stylistic approach that reflects his enduring passion for art.
The works on display are rich in pop culture references, featuring figures such as Charles Manson, Frank Zappa, and Steve Martin. One notable piece, “What Lurks on Channel X,” incorporates images from films, comic books, and historical crime figures. The vibrant canvas presents a tapestry of cultural icons, including Jerry Lewis and various notorious criminals, merging nostalgia with a critical lens on societal issues.
Zombie’s style can be likened to several modern art movements, drawing inspiration from pop art, underground comics, and collage techniques. His works resonate with themes found in the magazine “Famous Monsters of Filmland,” showcasing a blend of humor and horror. One painting titled “Metal Machine Music” references multiple cultural touchstones, including the band Devo and the iconic wrestler Santo.
Another standout piece, “The Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television,” pays homage to the late comedian George Carlin. This artwork not only captures the essence of Carlin’s groundbreaking routine but also presents a visually compelling interpretation of the theme. The painting includes bold, colorful text that confronts viewers with its brashness, showcasing Zombie’s ability to merge artistic expression with social commentary.
As the exhibition continues at the Morrison Gallery, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the colorful and chaotic world that Rob Zombie has created. “What Lurks on Channel X: Paintings by Rob Zombie” can be viewed at the gallery located at 60 North Main St., Kent, providing a rare opportunity to experience the artistic side of a rock icon.
