Sequel to $585 Million Sci-Fi Hit I Am Legend 2 Facing Delays
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 blockbuster, I Am Legend 2, featuring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, is currently in a state of limbo. While excitement is building in the science fiction community, recent images circulating on social media have sparked confusion about the film’s production status. These images, which appear to show the two actors on set, have turned out to be fabricated, leading fans to wonder when they can expect to see the sequel.
With the success of recent science fiction films, Hollywood is capitalizing on the genre, with titles like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Dune: Messiah set to hit theaters soon. The former is expected to continue the momentum of its predecessors, while the latter promises to conclude Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed trilogy. As these franchises move forward, the sci-fi landscape will need to accommodate new entries, particularly as iconic series like Predator and Alien attempt to reclaim their status.
The I Am Legend franchise, which grossed over $585 million worldwide, has a strong fan base eager for a sequel. While both Smith and Jordan have expressed enthusiasm about collaborating, the film’s progress has been slow. The script penned by Akiva Goldsman, who also wrote the original, remains unfinished.
Confusion arose recently when images surfaced on the social media account of Diego Rosa, allegedly showing him with Smith and Jordan in New York City. Fans were excited to see what appeared to be behind-the-scenes moments. However, it was later revealed that these images were likely generated using artificial intelligence, raising questions about their authenticity and the film’s actual production timeline.
Smith, who portrayed Robert Neville in the original film, shared insights about the potential direction of the sequel. He mentioned a shift to an alternative ending where his character survives, allowing for a new narrative involving Jordan’s character as the leader of a settlement in Connecticut. “What we were gonna do was the prequel,” Smith explained in April 2025. “But what if we make a new version from the alternate ending, where your character is still alive?”
Despite the delay in production, there remains a strong belief among the principal actors that I Am Legend 2 will eventually come to fruition. Smith’s optimism reflects a commitment to the project, suggesting that fans may need to exercise patience before the sequel becomes a reality.
As the science fiction genre continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how I Am Legend 2 will fit into the broader landscape. With Hollywood focusing on securing sequels and reboots, the anticipation surrounding this sequel underscores its potential impact. Until official confirmation of production surfaces, fans can only wait and speculate on the next chapter for Neville and the world of I Am Legend.
