Alex Honnold Takes on Taipei 101 in Historic Skyscraper Climb
On March 2, 2024, renowned rock climber Alex Honnold will attempt to ascend Taipei 101, a towering skyscraper that stands at 1,667 feet in Taiwan, without any safety equipment. This daring feat has garnered unprecedented attention, particularly with Netflix livestreaming the event, showcasing the niche sport of skyscraper climbing to a global audience.
Honnold, who gained fame for his ropeless ascent of El Capitan in the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo,” is set to face a challenge reminiscent of the climb made by Dan Goodwin in 1986. Goodwin, then an aspiring climber, famously scaled the CN Tower in Toronto, which at the time was the tallest structure in the world at 1,100 feet. “I was terrified,” Goodwin recounted, reflecting on the experience that involved scaling the tower without ropes or harnesses.
Skyscraper climbing is distinct from traditional rock climbing. It demands not only exceptional physical strength but also immense mental focus. The sport is practiced by a select group of climbers, with the number of known skyscraper climbers worldwide estimated to be fewer than a dozen. This exclusivity is partly due to the legal risks involved; many climbers operate underground, as these activities are often illegal.
French climber Alain Robert, known for his bare-handed ascents of over 200 buildings since the 1990s, has faced significant legal consequences for his pursuits. He has been arrested more than 170 times during his climbing career, highlighting the risks that accompany this extreme sport.
Honnold’s upcoming climb marks a significant moment not only for him but also for the sport itself. As he prepares for this ascent, the attention surrounding it may inspire a new generation of climbers to explore the limits of human capability. Given the nature of the climb and the platform provided by Netflix, this event could redefine public perception of skyscraper climbing.
With the world watching, Honnold’s attempt at Taipei 101 will not only test his physical and mental limits but also challenge the boundaries of what can be achieved without safety equipment. As the date approaches, anticipation builds around this extraordinary event, highlighting the thrill and danger inherent in climbing the world’s tallest structures.
