Bijou Phillips has opened up about her ongoing health crisis and her fight for survival to ensure a better future for her 12-year-old daughter, Fianna. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Phillips, 45, shared the emotional and physical challenges she faces as she battles kidney disease while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for her child. Born into a famous family—her father, John Phillips, was a founding member of the Mamas & the Papas—she has often sought to keep her life private.

The actress, known for her role in Almost Famous, has recently garnered media attention due to her ex-husband, Danny Masterson, being sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for rape. This crisis has prompted Phillips to break her silence after nearly a decade, as she seeks support and raises awareness about organ donation.

Health Struggles and Support System

Phillips was born with underdeveloped kidneys and spent the first three months of her life on dialysis. Although she recovered, her kidney function remained limited. At the age of 36, she required a transplant, and on February 11, 2023, she announced on social media that she was hospitalized and back on dialysis.

“To put my health out there publicly was terrifying, but my friends and family got fed up with me. They took control and were like, ‘We’re doing this,’” she explained, highlighting the essential role of her support system. Her advocates include her siblings, boyfriend Jamie Mazur, and lifelong friends such as Nicky Hilton and Paris Hilton, who assist in communication with her medical team and provide emotional support.

Despite the challenges, Phillips remains positive. “I feel pretty good since I started dialysis,” she stated, although her situation remains precarious as she awaits a suitable kidney donor. Her brother is attempting to enter a kidney exchange program after being initially denied, which could help improve her chances of receiving a transplant.

Raising Awareness and Navigating Healthcare

Phillips has witnessed a groundswell of support, with approximately 1,300 people expressing interest in being tested as potential donors. “It’s something people don’t really understand or talk about. There are so many people that are suffering and on dialysis. Dialysis is not a cure,” she emphasized, underscoring the urgent need for kidney transplants.

In discussing her past experiences with healthcare, Phillips recounted the difficulties she faced during her first transplant, including denied coverage from the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and complications with Medicare. “It’s insane that you have to strategize insurance while fighting for your life,” she reflected, noting that the system is complex and often inequitable, especially for families with limited resources.

Phillips has had to navigate immense financial pressures, as some necessary medications remain unaffordable without approval. “I pay out of pocket because I don’t have a choice,” she said, illustrating the burdens that many face while managing serious health conditions.

Her journey has not only tested her physically but also spiritually. “I’ve found a deep need for spirituality that I didn’t have when I was younger. I’ve been praying a lot,” Phillips shared, highlighting a shift in her perspective as she confronts the reality of her situation.

As a single mother, her focus is on being present for her daughter. “The fight is back. I’m it. I’m all she’s got,” she stated, expressing pride in Fianna’s accomplishments and resilience. “She’s the strongest little human. I’m just so proud to be her mother.”

Every day is a balancing act for Phillips, who strives to maintain a sense of routine amid her health struggles. “Today I took my daughter to school, came home, had a little snack, went to dialysis, came home…” she described, illustrating how life continues despite the challenges.

Phillips remains optimistic about the future, as she reflects on the beauty of life and the lessons learned through adversity. “We’re so lucky to be here on this planet, in these bodies, getting to live this life. There’s so much love, there’s so much beauty,” she concluded, emphasizing gratitude and hope in the face of uncertainty.
