Community Health Initiative Hosts Colon Cancer Awareness Event
On March 26, 2026, the Community Health Improvement Network (CHIN) will host a Colon Cancer Awareness Lunch & Learn at NorthPark Church in Meridian, Mississippi. This free event, which begins at noon, aims to educate the public about colon cancer prevention and the significance of early detection. Residents are encouraged to attend, but an RSVP is required by March 24.
Expert Insights on Colon Cancer
The session will feature Dr. Thomas Barry Calvit, a prominent gastroenterologist, who will delve into the risks associated with colon cancer and discuss preventive measures. Colon cancer ranks as the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both men and women in the United States, yet it remains one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
According to Dr. Calvit, “Colon cancer is preventable since it typically develops from polyps that can be detected and removed before they become cancerous. Colon cancer is a growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine.” His insights emphasize the critical role of early detection in combating this disease.
Community Engagement and Awareness
Beverly Knox, President of CHIN, highlighted the importance of community education in reducing colon cancer incidence. She stated, “Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented through early screening and awareness. By educating our community about prevention and encouraging regular screenings, we can help save lives.”
To reserve a seat at this important event, individuals should contact Beverly Knox at 601-483-2661 by the deadline of March 24.
This Lunch & Learn presents an opportunity for residents to gain valuable information about colon cancer, fostering a healthier community through education and awareness.
