Innovative Surgery Restores Confidence for Breast Cancer Patients
The surgical landscape for breast cancer patients is evolving. At Endeavor Health in suburban Chicago, a groundbreaking procedure known as oncoplastic breast reduction is helping patients not only preserve their breasts but also regain their sense of self. This innovative approach combines cancer treatment with aesthetic surgery, providing a holistic solution during a challenging time.
According to the American Cancer Society, over 300,000 women will face an invasive breast cancer diagnosis this year. For many, this means undergoing multiple surgeries to ensure complete removal of cancer cells. Jody Simmons, a breast cancer survivor, shared her experience after being diagnosed with stage zero breast cancer two years ago. “I still see it in the mirror. Scars are fading. I don’t feel distorted,” she said. Simmons emphasized that her priority was feeling whole again rather than focusing solely on the physical aspects of her appearance.
Dr. Catherine Pesce, an oncologist at Endeavor Health and Simmons’ surgeon, explained the complexities of breast cancer. “Stage zero breast cancer is microscopic,” she noted. “We often need to remove a significant amount of tissue to ensure all cancer cells are eliminated.” This concern is compounded by the fear of resulting asymmetry after surgery, which can affect a woman’s self-image.
To address these issues, Dr. Mark Sisco, head of plastic surgery at Endeavor Health, described how oncoplastic breast reduction merges cancer treatment with an aesthetic procedure. “This operation allows a cancer patient to go to sleep, have their cancer removed, and wake up feeling better about their body,” he stated. This dual approach is particularly beneficial for patients like Simmons, who underwent a lumpectomy on her left breast while Dr. Sisco performed a small reduction on the right.
This technique not only mitigates physical asymmetry but also enhances recovery. “A lumpectomy alone typically takes about an hour, with a recovery time of around one week,” explained Dr. Pesce. “By incorporating the oncoplastic reduction, the overall recovery time may extend to two weeks, which is manageable for most patients.”
The benefits extend beyond aesthetic considerations. Dr. Sisco highlighted that patients with larger tumors who previously would have required a mastectomy can often avoid that more invasive procedure. He noted that performing both surgeries concurrently can lead to better outcomes, as it reduces the need for additional surgeries and minimizes complications related to radiation treatment.
One of the procedure’s significant advantages is the ability to secure clean margins during surgery. Dr. Pesce mentioned, “We take an x-ray while in surgery to ensure we have adequately removed the cancerous tissue.” This immediate verification helps confirm that the margins around the excised tissue are cancer-free, reducing the likelihood of recurrence.
Despite the promising results of this innovative approach, access to such surgical options may not be available to all women. Research published in the National Library of Medicine indicates a potential shortage of reconstructive plastic surgeons in certain regions, coupled with scheduling challenges for simultaneous procedures.
For Simmons, the opportunity to choose this type of surgery was empowering. “I chose to do it, and I’m really glad that I did,” she reflected. “You look at the scars every day in the mirror, and it just makes you feel whole.”
Healthcare professionals encourage patients facing a breast cancer diagnosis to advocate for themselves and explore all available surgical options, including oncoplastic breast reduction. As surgical techniques continue to advance, patients may find solutions that not only address their medical needs but also enhance their emotional well-being during recovery.
