New Subclade K Flu Variant Spreads Rapidly in Japan, Risks US

A new variant of the influenza virus, known as Subclade K, is spreading rapidly in Japan, raising concerns about its potential impact on the United States as the winter cold and flu season begins. This subtype of the type A flu virus, which typically appears at the start of the flu season, has already contributed to a notable increase in flu cases in Japan and is affecting countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom.

According to a report by The Japan Times, officials at the Japan Institute of Health analyzed 23 patient samples since September, finding that 22 of those samples, or 96%, tested positive for the Subclade K variant. While this new strain has led to a rise in flu cases, the institute indicated that it does not seem to pose a higher risk for severe symptoms and is not significantly more contagious than prior flu variants.

As of November 23, 2023, approximately 196,895 flu cases had been reported across 3,800 medical facilities in Japan. This average of more than 51 flu patients per facility is well above the threshold of 30 that triggers a national flu warning, which has now been issued by health authorities in Japan. This figure starkly contrasts with last year’s average of only 2.36 flu patients per facility during the same period.

Impact of Early Flu Season

The early onset of this flu season has been partly attributed to the arrival of the Subclade K variant coinciding with the time when most Japanese citizens receive their flu vaccinations. Many individuals found themselves infected before they could obtain their flu shots, resulting in a lack of the necessary antibodies to combat the virus effectively.

Last year’s flu season in Japan peaked at the end of the year, with an average of 64.39 patients reported per facility, indicating that the current situation is significantly more severe. Health experts are closely monitoring this developing situation as the flu season progresses.
