Rising Respiratory Illnesses Prompt New Care Options in Brainerd
Brainerd is experiencing a surge in respiratory illnesses, prompting Essentia Health to expand its care options. The healthcare provider is offering same-day and virtual care services to assist individuals in receiving timely medical attention. This initiative aims to alleviate pressure on emergency departments, which often see a significant number of visits for non-emergency conditions.
Understanding Care Options
Research has indicated that approximately one in three visits to emergency departments are for issues that do not require immediate attention. To address this, Essentia Health encourages patients to select appropriate care based on their symptoms. By doing so, individuals can receive the necessary treatment while ensuring that emergency services remain accessible for critical cases.
Individuals not feeling well can consider several care alternatives tailored to their specific symptoms. These options include:
- 24/7 Video Visit On Demand: Access care anytime through the MyChart patient portal for urgent needs.
- E-Visit: Online consultations with an Essentia provider available 24/7 for common conditions.
- Primary Care Visit or Virtual Video Visit: Ideal for addressing common illnesses like cold symptoms, flu, sore throat, and nausea.
- Urgent Care or Walk-In Care: Recommended for low-grade fevers, migraines, and persistent coughs.
Patients can also view a Wait Time Map to find the nearest care locations quickly. It is crucial to go to an emergency department for serious symptoms, including difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe pain, or sudden changes in mental status.
Expert Guidance and Current Trends
For those unsure where to start, Essentia Health provides several resources, including a Nurse Care Line at 800-714-4646 and access to the MyChart platform. The organization also offers an online tool to help patients navigate their immediate care options.
Christie Erickson, a nurse practitioner and associate chief medical officer for Essentia’s East Market, emphasized the importance of appropriate care. “We have a number of ways to ensure our patients receive the right level of care, based on their symptoms,” she stated in a recent news release. “These include same-day options so we can get you in right away. We’re experiencing an especially challenging flu season, and we want to do everything we can to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.”
In the past week, approximately 15% of emergency department visits at Essentia Health-Fargo were related to influenza. According to data from the Minnesota Department of Health as of December 21, 2023, the state reported over 5,100 influenza cases, a significant increase from fewer than 1,900 cases just two weeks prior. In addition to influenza, high rates of COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are placing further strain on healthcare resources.
By providing a variety of care options, Essentia Health aims to enhance patient outcomes while maintaining the efficiency of emergency services during this peak season of respiratory illness.
