The University of Idaho (UI) has been awarded a grant of $1.33 million aimed at enhancing the diagnosis and support systems for individuals affected by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This funding is part of a larger initiative, with a total grant amount of $6 million, provided by the U.S. Department of Defense. The project involves collaboration among five universities, including UI, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Leading the research is Colin Xu, an assistant professor in UI’s Department of Psychology and Communication. Xu’s team is focusing on developing machine learning models to facilitate the early detection of PTSD. The researchers aim to explore how smart wearable devices, along with biochemical markers, can refine the screening and diagnostic processes for this condition.

Exploring Family Dynamics and Behavioral Risks

In addition to improving diagnostic measures, the research team is investigating the impact of post-deployment stress on military families. This aspect of the study seeks to understand how such stress can elevate the risks of harmful behaviors, including family violence, substance abuse, and suicide among military personnel and their families.

The partnership between UI and the other participating universities will provide a comprehensive approach to identifying predictors of these serious issues within military households. By integrating advanced technology and psychological research, the project aspires to create effective support mechanisms for those affected by PTSD.

As the study progresses, the findings may lead to significant improvements in how military families are supported, ultimately aiming to mitigate the long-term impacts of PTSD and foster healthier family environments.
