Urgent Call for Blood Donations as Bloodworks Northwest Declares ‘Code Red’

Bloodworks Northwest has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations after declaring a “Code Red” due to critically low supplies. The organization has reported that it currently has less than two days’ worth of essential blood types and platelets. According to the Washington State Department of Health, the situation poses a significant risk to both routine surgeries and emergency medical care.

The shortage arises periodically as blood components have limited shelf lives and donor participation can vary. Juan Cotto, a spokesperson for Bloodworks Northwest, explained that while shortages are not uncommon, the current situation is particularly dire. “Type O blood and platelets are essential for emergency treatments and surgeries,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of immediate donations.

The decline in donations has been attributed to several factors, including severe winter weather, holiday distractions, and cancelled blood drives. This winter, rain and flooding have severely impacted donor turnout, leading to the early closure of two donor centers in Washington due to insufficient donors. Cotto stated that such weather conditions have complicated logistics and disrupted transportation routes, further exacerbating the shortage.

To address the urgent need, Bloodworks Northwest and the American Red Cross are sourcing blood from other regions. However, this approach is not sustainable in the long term, as it cannot adequately meet the increasing demand. The Washington State Department of Health has revealed that there are currently 38,000 open slots for donations at Bloodworks through February, with a critical need for 23,000 of those slots to be filled by Valentine’s Day to stabilize the blood supply.

Each pint of blood donated can save up to three lives, underscoring the profound impact of individual contributions. Bloodworks Northwest requires approximately 1,000 donors daily to keep pace with demand.
