Walter F. Currie, Beloved Engineer and Family Man, Dies at 91

Walter F. Currie, an esteemed engineer and dedicated family man, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by family, he concluded a courageous decade-long battle against cancer. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 11, 1934, to Floyd and Stella Currie, he remained a proud Kentuckian throughout his life.

Currie’s journey took a pivotal turn in 1950 when he met his future wife, Catherine Louise Shelburn, while attending Atherton High School. Their relationship blossomed during their teenage years, culminating in a shared graduation. They both continued their education at the University of Kentucky, where Currie pursued a degree in engineering, joined the Air Force ROTC, and became a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

In 1961, Currie founded Currie Aerospace Associates, an independent sales organization that represented national electronics manufacturers. The business began in the spare bedroom of their rented home in Lake Conway Estates. Currie served as the company’s sales engineer, while Catherine took on the role of secretary. Over the years, the company evolved, eventually becoming known as Currie, Peak, and Frazier, Inc., and expanded to employ 36 staff members.

Currie’s loyalty to the University of Kentucky remained unwavering throughout his life. He consistently supported the institution, donning Kentucky Blue and fervently cheering for its athletic teams. His commitment to education extended beyond his own academic pursuits. Currie encouraged his family to embrace learning, believing in the importance of understanding how things work.

As a husband, father, and grandfather, Currie was deeply cherished by his family. He took immense pride in their achievements and made it a point to stay informed about their lives. His dedication to imparting knowledge made him a valued figure in his household. Described as a durable and private man, Currie’s presence will be profoundly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Currie; two sons, Scott Currie (Liz) of Mosier, Oregon, and Beau Currie (Mary) of Windermere, Florida; and five grandchildren: Trevor Currie (Annie) of Missoula, Montana; Lucas Currie of Playa Grande, Costa Rica; Charles Summers (Anastasiya) of New York City; Nathan Currie of Hailey, Idaho; and Amanda Summers (Geri) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The family plans to hold a private memorial service at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, where Currie’s cremated remains will be interred alongside his parents in a section of the cemetery originally arranged by Colonel George E. Currie in 1894.
