Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood Honored with 2025 Leadership Award

Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has been awarded the 2025 Leadership Award by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA). The honor was presented during the association’s annual conference, held from October 15 to 18, 2025, in Duluth. This award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the fire service and its projects.

The MSFCA president highlighted the qualities that led to Sherwood’s recognition, stating that he exemplifies leadership, innovation, and a commitment to community partnership. According to a post on the Bemidji Fire Department’s Facebook page, “Under his guidance, the Bemidji Fire Department has grown in capacity, morale, and readiness.”

Sherwood has been with the Bemidji Fire Department since 2002, starting as a residential dorm firefighter before being appointed fire chief in 2021. His leadership has been crucial in promoting accountability and continuous improvement within the department.

Recognition for Advocacy and Response Efforts

During the award presentation, MSFCA President Eric Bullen commended Sherwood for his advocacy for the fire service at both state and national levels. Earlier in the year, Sherwood secured a scholarship to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C. Bullen noted, “Chief Sherwood fit in seamlessly with our legislative committee contingency, advocating, with broad knowledge, for greater Minnesota.”

Bullen also praised Sherwood’s leadership during an emergency response following a severe storm that struck on June 21. In the chaotic aftermath, Sherwood led his team in managing a significant surge in emergency calls. He coordinated with the State Fire Marshal Division and the MSFCA to activate the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan, which allowed resources and personnel to assist the Bemidji Fire Department. This action enabled his team to address their personal property losses while ensuring community safety.

The recognition has resonated with Sherwood’s staff, who expressed pride in having such a dedicated leader. The Facebook post concluded, “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits.” This sentiment reflects not only the respect Sherwood commands within the department but also the positive impact his leadership has on the broader Bemidji community.
