Canucks Launch Diwali-Themed Jersey Designed by Suki Kaur

The Vancouver Canucks have unveiled a new Diwali-themed jersey designed by local artist Suki Kaur. This initiative allows fans to celebrate the festival of lights while showcasing their team pride. The jersey features a vibrant design that incorporates elements such as a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and traditional phulkari patterns.

Kaur, based in Surrey, emphasized the significance of the phulkari in Punjabi culture but aimed for the design to resonate with a broader audience. “The phulkari is special to me because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people,” Kaur stated. “You see variations in every culture.”

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Canucks have released merchandise in celebration of Diwali. The team is hosting dedicated Diwali nights on November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford and again on November 5, 2023, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Fans have expressed enthusiasm for the new merchandise, with many hoping for even more offerings in the future.

“I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person,” said Canucks fan Arjan Attwal. The team has made the jersey available at a price of $750, alongside more affordable options featuring the new logo, including hats, hoodies, and pucks.

Despite the excitement, some fans have voiced concerns over the jersey’s high price. “It’s a nice design, I mean, for the price, it’s terrible. $750 for a jersey is kind of crippling,” remarked fan Austin Taylor. “A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”

The Canucks’ Diwali initiative not only highlights the team’s commitment to inclusivity but also celebrates the diverse cultural fabric of their fan base. With these new offerings, the franchise aims to foster a sense of community and shared joy during the festive season.
