Chester Honors Freida Gibbs with Statue Celebrating Her Legacy

Chester, Pennsylvania, recently marked a significant moment in its history with the unveiling of a statue honoring Freida “The Cheetah” Gibbs, a local hero and trailblazer in the world of kickboxing. The statue was unveiled on November 6, 2023, and now stands proudly in the park across from Chester City Hall, located at East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.

Mayor Stefan Roots praised Gibbs for her remarkable achievements, stating that her journey to becoming the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title has inspired many. Known as “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World,” Gibbs has a professional martial arts career that spans three decades, during which she earned titles from the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA), World Kickboxing Association (WKA), and World Combat Kickboxing (WCK).

“This statue represents the essence of Chester itself—a story of grit, perseverance, and pride,” Mayor Roots remarked during the unveiling ceremony. He highlighted how Gibbs embodies the spirit of determination and purpose, serving as a role model for women everywhere.

The statue was initially unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs was an All-American and the all-time leading point scorer in basketball. Following the university’s closure, Villanova University took possession of the statue and generously gifted it to the city of Chester.

Roots emphasized the community’s enduring pride in Gibbs, declaring, “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it. It tells them no goal is too big.” He noted that greatness continues to flourish in Chester.

The statue, sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze in Chester, captures the essence of Gibbs’ journey. At the unveiling, Gibbs expressed her deep connection to her hometown, saying, “Wow, what a moment. To stand here today, back here where it all began, it means everything to me.”

She emphasized the importance of her community in shaping her success, stating, “This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us. It represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience.” With emotion in her voice, Gibbs added, “Chester is my story. Thank you, Chester. I love you.”

The statue serves not only as a tribute to Gibbs’ accomplishments but also as a reminder of the strength and unity within the Chester community. As residents and visitors pass by, they are encouraged to reflect on the values of determination and support that define this vibrant city.
