Cleveland Clinic Commits $50 Million to Combat Hunger in Ohio
Cleveland Clinic has announced a significant commitment to address hunger across Ohio, Florida, and Nevada with a five-year investment of $50 million. This funding aims to support local food banks and community organizations that provide essential food resources to vulnerable populations. The health system’s initiative includes backing the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and various food banks, pantries, and markets in regions where the Clinic operates.
In a statement, Kristin Warzocha, CEO of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the Cleveland Clinic’s investment, highlighting the ongoing struggle against hunger in the community. “The need among families remains high, and this remarkable commitment — especially to addressing childhood hunger — sends a powerful message that the health of our community begins with access to nutritious food,” she noted.
Long-term Commitment to Community Health
The Cleveland Clinic’s pledge is designed to provide stability for community organizations, allowing them to plan for the future and expand their services. Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO of Cleveland Clinic, emphasized the institution’s responsibility as an anchor organization. “This commitment reflects our belief that addressing hunger is essential to improving overall health and creating stronger, healthier communities for generations to come,” he remarked.
Food insecurity is a pressing issue in the United States, with a reported 47 million Americans living in food-insecure households in 2023, including nearly 14 million children, according to a federal report released in 2024. The Cleveland Clinic’s pledge builds upon its ongoing efforts to combat hunger. In 2025, the health system contributed $2 million to local food banks and had previously invested $10.4 million in 2023 to develop innovative food-access initiatives.
Innovative Programs Addressing Food Needs
Cleveland Clinic’s programs aimed at addressing hunger include a variety of initiatives such as a teaching kitchen, summer and weekend meal programs for children, food vouchers, grocery delivery services, and the distribution of free produce from local farms. Additionally, the Clinic operates food pantries for eligible patients, ensuring that those in need receive the support required to maintain their health.
This latest investment marks a significant step in the Cleveland Clinic’s ongoing mission to enhance community well-being through improved access to nutritious food. As food insecurity continues to challenge many families, the Clinic’s comprehensive approach underscores the importance of collaboration between healthcare and community resources in tackling such critical issues.
