Community Mourns James Cookingham, Local Farmer and Family Man

James (Jimmy) Cookingham, a dedicated farmer and beloved member of the Millerton community, passed away on January 19, 2026. He was 51 years old. Born on April 17, 1972, in Sharon, he was the son of Robert Cookingham and the late Joanne Cookingham. Jimmy’s life was marked by his deep-rooted connection to local agriculture and his close ties to family and friends.

Life and Legacy of a Local Farmer

Cookingham was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Webutuck Central School. From a young age, he developed a passion for farming at Daisey Hill, which later became a family enterprise. Together with his wife, Jessica Cookingham, he co-owned Daisey Hill Farm in Millerton, where they cultivated pumpkins and sweet corn. His commitment to agriculture was not just a profession but a significant part of his identity.

Apart from his agricultural pursuits, Cookingham enjoyed outdoor activities. He loved riding four-wheelers, fishing, and deer hunting. He was known for his enthusiasm for social gatherings, often igniting roaring bonfires to bring friends and family together. His warmth and vibrant spirit touched many lives in the community.

A Loving Family Man

Cookingham’s family was central to his life. He is survived by his father, Robert Cookingham, his wife, Jessica, and their two daughters, Hailey Cookingham-Loiodice and Taylor Ellis-Tanner. His daughter Hailey fondly recalls their unique father-daughter bond, which included special handshakes, affectionate nicknames, and playful “quacking noises” that reflected their close relationship.

He is also survived by his sister, Brenda Valyou, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Cookingham’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to family, and love for the land.

The community plans to hold memorial services in the future to honor his memory. The Kenny Funeral Home is managing the arrangements. Cookingham’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through the memories shared by his family and friends, as well as through the cherished moments spent at Daisey Hill Farm.
