Food 4 Less Staff Support Local Youth Through Generous Volunteer Work

A local nonprofit organization, Make It Happen for Yolo County, recently received invaluable support from employees of Food 4 Less in Woodland, California. The store’s staff volunteered their time to assist in organizing essential household goods for youth transitioning out of foster care and homelessness. This collaboration aims to alleviate the challenges faced by these young individuals as they strive for independence.

Volunteer Efforts Transform Storage Units

The initiative, led by Cathi Schmidt, Executive Director of Make It Happen for Yolo County, focused on organizing furniture, appliances, and other necessities within five storage units. Following a busy fall season, the nonprofit needed support to ensure that items were accessible for the youth they serve. Store director Vicente Osegueda and store manager John Goselin played crucial roles in this transformation.

Many of the young people benefiting from this program experience what is known as “furniture poverty.” Despite having a roof over their heads, they often lack basic items such as beds and kitchen equipment. This deficiency can significantly hinder their ability to pursue career opportunities or higher education.

Creating Dignified Experiences for Youth

Thanks to the efforts of the Food 4 Less team, the nonprofit can now provide a more organized and welcoming environment for young people seeking assistance. When they arrive at the facility, they are guided through an experience that respects their dignity and allows them to choose the items they need to move forward in life.
