Forest Park Zoo Secures $41,000 for Winter Animal Care
The Zoo in Forest Park, located in Springfield, has successfully raised $41,092 to enhance winter care for its animals. This financial boost comes from a combination of public donations, which totaled $21,092 from 76 donors, and a matching contribution from the Anthony M. and Lea Scibelli Charitable Foundation, effectively surpassing the initial campaign goal of $20,000.
Community Support Drives Fundraising Success
In a statement, Sarah Tsitso, executive director of The Zoo in Forest Park & Education Center, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support. “This time of year, we are overwhelmed and humbled by the number of people who step up and support The Zoo,” she stated. Tsitso emphasized the importance of these contributions, noting that many of the animals are vulnerable and depend on community generosity to remain safe and healthy.
Although the zoo is closed to the public from November to March, it continues to operate year-round. Gabry Tyson, assistant executive director, clarified this common misconception. “Because we are a seasonal experience for guests, people often assume we operate seasonally as a zoo as well,” Tyson said. “In reality, the work here never stops. For the animals, this is their home, and they remain in their home regardless of the season.”
Funding Allocation and Future Plans
The funds raised will be allocated to essential daily animal care, including food, heat, bedding, habitat maintenance, and medical needs. This support is crucial during the colder months, when maintaining the well-being of the animals is a top priority.
The Zoo in Forest Park also plans to offer educational camps for students during their breaks in February and April. The facility is expected to reopen to the public in late March, contingent on weather conditions.
