Leading the team through this remarkable journey is head coach Fred Hoiberg, who is joined by his sons, Sam and Charlie, both of whom are playing significant roles in the program.

Sam Hoiberg has transitioned from a walk-on player to one of the Big Ten’s most versatile guards. As the season unfolds, he has emerged as a key player, showcasing impressive statistics, including a fourth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation at 5.25-1 and tying for first in the conference for steals with 35. His twin brother, Charlie, serves as a graduate manager, contributing to the team’s success by running practices, facilitating individual workouts, and producing analytics reports.

“We’re living our dreams right now,” Sam expressed, reflecting on their shared experience within the program. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the positive journey thus far.

Family Dynamics in College Basketball

The Hoiberg family exemplifies the unique dynamics of family involvement in college athletics. According to NCAA research, there are 20 Division I men’s teams this season with head coaches who have at least one son on their roster. This phenomenon is not limited to Nebraska; similar stories unfold across the nation. For instance, Daniyal Robinson, head coach of North Texas, shares the sidelines with his son, Reece, who has already made memorable contributions, including a critical performance leading to an overtime victory against Eastern Washington.

In another example, Hubert Davis, head coach at North Carolina, experienced a touching moment when his son, Elijah Davis, scored his first points in a game against East Carolina. “I’m the head coach, so I try to be head coach and not Dad,” Hubert noted, visibly emotional. The Hoiberg family is deeply rooted in basketball. Fred Hoiberg was a standout player at Iowa State and later enjoyed a successful coaching career at the same institution. Their daughter, Paige, pursues a career in medical device sales in Chicago.

Sam and Charlie played high school basketball together at Lincoln Pius X. While Charlie initially attended TCU as a regular student, Sam sought to continue his basketball career at Nebraska. After a challenging recruitment process, he walked on at Nebraska to develop his skills against higher competition. Following a series of injuries to teammates, Sam seized the opportunity to play significant minutes, starting 32 of the last 33 games since the latter part of the 2022-23 season.

Charlie’s journey has also been noteworthy. He spent two seasons as a student manager at TCU, then interned with his father before returning as a graduate manager. “It’s been a lot of fun having Charlie part of the program,” Fred remarked, appreciating how Charlie contributes to Sam’s development on and off the court.

Building Confidence Together

The bond between the twins has proven beneficial for Sam, particularly in building his offensive confidence. His scoring average has doubled to 8.2 points, with his shooting accuracy increasing from 43% to 53%. “He reminds me of the best I’ve played, and that gives me confidence,” Sam said, highlighting the supportive dynamic they share.

While Fred acknowledges the challenges of balancing his roles as a coach and father, he remains committed to making the most of their time together. Charlie, however, is fully immersed in the experience, cherishing the opportunity to be with his family daily. “I get to be with them every single day. Life’s great right now,” he stated, reflecting on the joy of his current situation.

As the season progresses, the Hoibergs continue to navigate the highs and lows of college basketball together, contributing to a memorable chapter in Nebraska’s sports history.
