Chico’s culinary creativity took center stage as local architects transformed traditional designs into edible masterpieces for the inaugural Chico Community Gingerbread House Contest. Hosted at the Museum of Northern California Art, the event showcased seven unique entries, each crafted by participants ranging from children as young as six to adults.

According to the museum’s Executive Director, Pat Macias, the creations are at least 80% edible, reflecting the impressive skills of the contestants. The designs included notable structures such as the El Rey Theater, a childhood home, a haunted chapel, and a whimsical sugar wonderland, demonstrating a diverse array of architectural styles and imaginative concepts.

The contest, inspired by the renowned National Gingerbread House Competition in Asheville, North Carolina, was organized by members of the Downtown Chico Business Association, including Jodi Drysdale and Pam Young. Their goal was to foster community spirit and creativity through this sweet competition, marking a festive addition to Chico’s cultural landscape.

Winners will be announced during the exhibit’s reception from 15:00 to 16:00 today at the museum. A panel of judges will evaluate entries for categories such as best in category, best overall, and a people’s choice award, allowing attendees to participate in the decision-making process.

As the first of its kind in the city, this contest highlights not only the artistic talents of local residents but also the growing interest in engaging community events that blend creativity with culinary arts. The event has drawn attention from residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the importance of community initiatives that celebrate local talent and foster engagement among diverse age groups.

The Chico Community Gingerbread House Contest is a delicious example of how art and food can come together to create memorable experiences. As the winners are revealed, the anticipation surrounding the event underscores the excitement of community participation in the arts.
