Historic Cabin in Pennsylvania Revamped as Unique Airbnb Retreat
A historic log cabin in Franklin Township, Pennsylvania, has been transformed into a unique Airbnb retreat, offering guests a blend of rustic charm and modern amenities. Owner Missy Halko dedicated over two years to restoring and updating the property, which dates back to the late 1700s or early 1800s.
Located at 1134 South Mountain Road, the cabin sits on a long, private driveway, surrounded by dense woodland. The property has a significant history, as it was possibly used to aid escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad. According to Halko, two paths were available for slaves seeking freedom: one via Chambersburg and Carlisle, while the other followed the woods east of the mountain for concealment. The cabin’s location positioned it strategically along that route.
The restoration process was meticulous, preserving the original footprint while incorporating modern improvements. The project involved significant demolition, allowing for structural enhancements such as foundation support, a new roof, and a front porch. Historical artifacts, including a 1930s Matthew Engman wood stove and original floorboards, were salvaged and repurposed. New mechanical systems were installed, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, ensuring comfort for future guests.
Modern Amenities Blend with Historical Features
The cabin’s exterior maintains its rustic appeal, with wood siding on the right preserved and new pine shiplap installed on the left, all stained and painted black for a contemporary finish. Inside, the transformation took about eight months, featuring drywalling, tiling, and extensive painting. Exposed logs and original floor joists complement the weathered wide plank wood floors, creating a harmonious atmosphere.
While some areas, like the kitchen and laundry room, received modern upgrades, the overall aesthetic reflects a Colonial style. The kitchen boasts a gas ILVE Italian stove, a vintage-style Iio refrigerator, and a Whirlpool biscuit-colored dishwasher, all designed to blend seamlessly with the cabin’s character. Antique furniture pieces, including a barley twist table, enhance the authentic feel of the space.
Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms await guests. One retains much of its original charm, featuring exposed ceilings and hand-hewn logs, while the adjacent room boasts a cathedral ceiling for a slightly more modern ambiance. A winding staircase leads to a loft area that overlooks the main living space, adding to the cabin’s unique layout.
Outdoor Features Enhance Guest Experience
A covered pavilion attached to the cabin extends the living space outdoors, accommodating up to eight people for dining. It includes a gas grill, a propane fire pit table, and outdoor furniture, making it ideal for gatherings. The pavilion’s supports are crafted from repurposed electric poles, further emphasizing the cabin’s commitment to sustainability.
The outdoor area features a cozy front porch with a tongue and groove ceiling, recessed lighting, and rocking chairs, inviting guests to relax and enjoy the serene surroundings. A concrete walkway leads to additional amenities, including a picnic table and a hot tub, while a fire pit provides a perfect spot for evening gatherings under the stars. The property also includes a pond, an outhouse, and a four-person camper, allowing visitors to experience the joys of camping while enjoying the comforts of home.
As a result of its wooded location, the cabin attracts a variety of wildlife, including deer and turkeys, enhancing the rural retreat experience. “The camper pad on the property allows folks to bring more family and friends or have a camping experience for the kiddos,” said Halko.
This historic log cabin, with its rich history and contemporary upgrades, promises a memorable stay for guests seeking an escape into nature while enjoying the comforts of modern living.
