Kent Syverud Appointed 16th President of University of Michigan

Kent Syverud, an alumnus of the University of Michigan, has served as chancellor and president of Syracuse University since 2013. Syverud’s extensive academic background includes previous positions as the dean of law schools at Vanderbilt University from 1997 to 2005 and at Washington University from 2005 to 2013. His academic credentials are impressive; he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Georgetown University before attending the University of Michigan, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. He later obtained a master’s degree in economics from the same institution in 1983.

During his early career, Syverud gained notable experience by clerking for U.S. District Judge Louis F. Oberdorfer and for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
