Kent Syverud has been appointed as the 16th President of the University of Michigan, following a unanimous vote by the board of regents during a special meeting. The decision was announced on Monday afternoon, marking a significant leadership change at one of the country’s premier universities.
Kent Syverud, an alumnus of the University of Michigan, has served as chancellor and president of Syracuse University since 2013. His tenure at Syracuse has been marked by a commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering a culture of innovation. In August 2022, he announced his intention to step down from his roles at Syracuse, with his departure scheduled for June 2026.
Syverud’s extensive academic background includes previous positions as the dean of law schools at Vanderbilt University from 1997 to 2005 and at Washington University from 2005 to 2013. His academic credentials are impressive; he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Georgetown University before attending the University of Michigan, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. He later obtained a master’s degree in economics from the same institution in 1983.
During his early career, Syverud gained notable experience by clerking for U.S. District Judge Louis F. Oberdorfer and for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. His legal expertise and administrative experience will be integral as he steps into this new role.
As President of the University of Michigan, Syverud will oversee one of the largest and most prestigious public universities in the United States. The institution is well-known for its robust academic programs, research initiatives, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. His leadership will be crucial in guiding the university through current challenges and opportunities in higher education.
The board of regents expressed confidence in Syverud’s ability to lead the university into a new era. His vision for the future includes enhancing student engagement, expanding academic offerings, and fostering partnerships within the community and beyond.
With his extensive experience and deep roots in the university’s culture, Syverud is poised to make a significant impact on the University of Michigan. The academic community looks forward to his leadership beginning in the upcoming months.
