The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners has achieved a remarkable milestone by receiving the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 20th consecutive year. This accolade underscores the board’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards in governmental budgeting practices.

According to a press release from the Lowndes County government, the award signifies a commitment to effective budget presentation that meets nationally recognized guidelines. These guidelines assess a budget’s effectiveness as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications tool.

To qualify for the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, Lowndes County’s budget documents had to be rated “proficient” in all four evaluation categories and satisfy 14 mandatory criteria within each category.

Commitment to Transparency and Quality

“Our team, particularly the Finance Department, puts in tremendous effort each year to produce a high-quality budget document that is both informative and accessible to the public,” stated Paige Dukes, Lowndes County manager. She emphasized that the aim is to provide residents with a clear understanding of essential services and how their tax dollars are utilized.

When awarded, the GFOA also recognizes individuals or departments primarily responsible for achieving this honor with a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation.

“We are delighted to receive this award for the 20th consecutive year,” said Bill Slaughter, chairman of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners. He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to best practices in budgeting, fiscal responsibility, and transparency.

Leading by Example

The GFOA Budget Awards Program has over 1,700 participants, with recent award recipients and their budget documents updated quarterly on the GFOA website. These recipients are recognized for their efforts to enhance budgeting quality and serve as models for other governments throughout North America.

The Government Finance Officers Association plays a vital role in advancing excellence in government finance, providing best practices, professional development, and resources for over 20,500 members and the communities they serve.
