Metra Launches Initiative to Combat Human Trafficking Among Riders
Metra, Chicago’s commuter rail system, has initiated an awareness campaign aimed at combating human trafficking by educating passengers and employees about recognizing the signs of this crime. The initiative involves distributing informational magnets and encouraging riders to report any suspicious activity. This proactive approach seeks to assist potential victims, acknowledging that trains are frequently used for trafficking purposes.
The campaign coincides with Human Trafficking Prevention Month and highlights the critical role Metra plays in identifying and preventing this pervasive issue. According to Jim Derwinski, Executive Director and CEO of Metra, studies show that approximately 95% of individuals trafficked are targeted by the age of 13. He emphasized the importance of early detection, as many victims are too frightened to seek help.
Metra’s awareness initiative aims to empower passengers to recognize behaviors indicative of individuals being held against their will. Derwinski articulated the grim reality of human trafficking, stating, “Trafficking is about taking an individual against their will from someplace where they’re being held, to someplace where they could be used, and so, trains are, unfortunately, a method of getting them from here to there.” He expressed hope that increased awareness could lead to the swift identification of victims and a reduction in trafficking incidents.
According to estimates, approximately 40 million people are trafficked globally, with a significant number in the United States. The financial implications of this crime are staggering, with trafficking in the U.S. generating an estimated profit of $236 billion. Derwinski encourages Metra commuters to familiarize themselves with trafficking indicators and share this knowledge within their communities to foster a supportive environment.
To facilitate awareness, Metra urges anyone who observes suspicious activity to report it directly to a conductor or Metra police. This streamlined reporting mechanism is designed to enable prompt intervention and aid for potential victims. The distributed magnets include a list of warning signs that can help riders identify individuals who may need assistance.
Metra’s efforts are part of a broader commitment to enhance passenger safety and security across its extensive network. In addition to educating riders, the agency has partnered with Reclaim13.org, a reputable organization focused on fighting human trafficking. This collaboration underscores Metra’s dedication to protecting its passengers and actively participating in the fight against this crime.
By promoting awareness and encouraging vigilance, Metra aims to create a safer environment for all commuters. The agency’s initiative reflects a growing understanding of the role public transportation can play in combating human trafficking and supporting vulnerable individuals. Through this campaign, Metra hopes to engage the community in the critical fight against this global issue.
