New Reporter Kelly Harju Joins The Dickinson Press Team

Kelly Harju has joined The Dickinson Press as the latest addition to its reporting team, bringing a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the publication. Originally from Pampanga in the Philippines, Harju relocated to North Dakota with her husband, Ben, marking a significant transition in her life and career.

From the Philippines to North Dakota

Harju’s journey began in Pampanga, a region celebrated for its picturesque mountainous landscapes. After spending considerable time adjusting to life in the United States, she pursued her long-held ambition of becoming a journalist. With over a decade of professional writing experience, Harju has always held a deep-seated interest in journalism, which she describes as her true calling.

Her passion for storytelling ignited during childhood, influenced by a love of books and narratives. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in communication, focusing on broadcasting and journalism. While at university, she served as a features correspondent and eventually took on the role of managing editor for the campus newspaper. These experiences provided her with insight into the essential role of journalism in society—serving the public through truthful reporting.

Overcoming Challenges to Embrace Journalism

Despite her aspirations, Harju initially took a detour into the marketing sector, spending eight years in that field due to fears surrounding the risks faced by journalists in the Philippines. The turning point for her came with the tragic 2009 Maguindanao massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 63 individuals, including 33 journalists. This horrific event highlighted the dangers of reporting in a country where corruption and political oppression are prevalent, leading to the Philippines being ranked among the most hazardous environments for journalists.

Reflecting on the situation, Harju quoted Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, who posed the poignant question, “What are you willing to sacrifice for the truth?” This inquiry resonated deeply with her and ultimately reaffirmed her commitment to journalism.

Now, as part of The Dickinson Press, Harju is determined to engage in public service journalism. She aims to ask challenging questions and provide accurate, informative reporting that contributes positively to the Dickinson community. Harju encourages residents to share their stories and important information, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to serve the public effectively.
