Oklahoma Bar Association Awards $12,000 in Law Scholarships
The Oklahoma Bar Association’s Indian Law Section has awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarships to four law students as part of the annual G. William Rice Memorial Scholarship. This year’s recipients include Baylee Ogle and Madison Bailey from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Cheyanne Hill from Oklahoma City University School of Law, and Madison Foster from the University of Tulsa College of Law.
The scholarships consist of one award of $5,000, one award of $3,000, and two awards of $2,000. These funds are intended to help offset the costs associated with bar examination preparation.
Honoring G. William Rice’s Legacy
Recipients of the scholarships are required to demonstrate both academic merit and a commitment to practicing Indian law in Oklahoma. This initiative honors the late G. William Rice, a prominent Indian law practitioner, professor, and co-director of the Native American Law Center at the University of Tulsa College of Law, who passed away in 2016.
All four awardees are third-year law students and enrolled tribal members, showcasing significant leadership in the field of Indian law. According to Debra Gee, co-chair of the scholarship committee, the selection process was particularly challenging due to the exceptional caliber of applicants this year.
Oklahoma boasts a rich cultural tapestry, being home to 39 federally recognized tribes and having the second-largest American Indian population in the United States. The Indian Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association consists of over 500 practitioners with a keen interest in Indian law.
This scholarship program not only provides financial support but also encourages the next generation of legal professionals to engage deeply with the complexities of Indian law, ensuring that the legacy and knowledge of leaders like G. William Rice continue to thrive.
