Rose Parade Honors Fire Survivors with Special Floats and Guests

The upcoming Rose Parade on January 1, 2026, will pay tribute to the survivors and victims of the devastating wildfires that impacted the greater Los Angeles area nearly a year earlier. This year’s event will feature special floats, vintage fire engines, and honored guests as the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, and Palisades come together to reflect on their shared experiences and resilience.

On January 7, 2025, the Eaton fire swept through the Palisades and Altadena, leaving a lasting impact on both regions despite their geographical and socio-economic differences. As the parade and the associated Rose Bowl game near the one-year anniversary of the fires, preparations are underway to commemorate this significant milestone. The Tournament of Roses has announced various initiatives, including ticket giveaways for fire survivors to attend the parade and related festivities.

In a poignant nod to the theme of recovery, Tournament of Roses President Mark Leavens unveiled the parade’s theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” which he had selected months before the fires. “The greatest achievements we have in life are not done alone,” Leavens stated, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration in overcoming adversity.

As the event approaches, the Tournament of Roses has begun revealing how the tragedies of the past year will be integrated into the celebrations. A standout feature will be the float titled “Rising Together,” created by the California Community Foundation and the Black Freedom Fund. This float, showcasing a majestic phoenix and California native plants, will serve as a central tribute to the affected communities. Survivors and representatives from local nonprofits will ride on the float, highlighting their ongoing recovery efforts.

Local leader Nic Arnzen, a member of the Altadena Town Council and a fire survivor, expressed gratitude for the recognition of affected families. He noted that the families chosen to participate represent many others who have experienced loss and struggle. “Honoring these families is intended to shine a light on our loss and continuing struggle,” Arnzen said.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation will also contribute to the celebration with its float, “Food for Health.” This entry will feature co-owners of a local burger establishment alongside local first responders, acknowledging the foundation’s efforts to provide meals to fire-impacted areas.

In a lively addition, Leavens and Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo will ride vintage fire engines along the parade route. Leavens will be aboard a 1967 Pasadena Fire Department fire engine, while Gordo will ride in a 1937 American LaFrance fire engine. Both leaders will be joined by community members who have faced the challenges of recovery.

One float that has sparked mixed reactions is the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association’s tribute to firefighters, humorously titled “Pancake Breakfast.” Featuring a giant fire truck dispensing syrup onto pancakes, the float has faced criticism for its lighthearted approach. In response, the float team has removed accompanying audio and music to address concerns about timing.

As the days count down to the Rose Parade, the energy surrounding the event builds. It promises to be a heartfelt celebration of resilience, community spirit, and the bonds formed in the face of adversity, marking a significant moment for all those affected by the wildfires.
