Signature Theatre’s ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ Blends Rock and Musical Theatre

The production of Safety Not Guaranteed at Signature Theatre successfully merges the vibrant energy of a rock musical with the intimate atmosphere of a concert. Based on the acclaimed 2012 sci-fi comedy film directed by Colin Trevorrow, this adaptation brings to life a story that explores time travel through a unique blend of humor and heartfelt emotion.

In this reimagining, book writer Nick Blaemire and composer Ryan Miller have crafted a narrative that resonates on stage, preserving the sharp wit of the original script while also allowing the characters to flourish in their new format. The plot centers on a Seattle Magazine editor, Jeff, portrayed by Preston Truman Boyd, who is tasked with investigating a peculiar classified ad that reads: “Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke… SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.”

Jeff, alongside magazine interns Arnau and Darius, embarks on a journey to uncover the identity of the ad’s author, leading them to Kenneth Calloway, a quirky employee at a local Shop Rite, played by Gunnar Manchester. As Darius, played by Mia Pak, delves deeper into Kenneth’s unconventional time travel proposition, the production showcases her engaging performance, starting with the upbeat opening number “Architects and Engineers.”

Her portrayal balances an appealing openness with comedic timing, effectively conveying Darius’ evolution from a detached journalist to someone who becomes emotionally invested in Kenneth’s unconventional quest. The chemistry between Pak and Manchester is palpable, as Darius navigates her own desires and fears while exploring the implications of time travel.

The ensemble cast also includes Boyd and Tyler Dobies, who plays Arnau, a character experiencing a personal transformation as he gains confidence and explores a romantic connection with librarian Tristan, portrayed by Joshua Morgan. Their subplot adds depth to the main narrative, enriching the overall experience.

The musical’s energy is amplified by the decision to have the characters break into song and engage with the live band throughout the performance. Music director Jeff Tanski leads the ensemble, which occupies a distinct stage elevated above the main performance area, creating a dynamic interaction between the characters and the audience.

This artistic choice, coupled with the direction of Oliver Butler and choreography by Lisa Fagan, ensures that the transition between musical and concert is seamless. The scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado enhances the hybrid presentation, while Jason Lyons’s lighting design elevates the concert atmosphere, effectively framing the action and engaging the audience.
