Staten Island Resident Seeks Answers on Missing NYC Trash Bin Order

A Staten Island resident is left in the dark after ordering a trash bin from New York City months ago and receiving no update on its delivery. Michael Monopoli, 76, contacted the local news outlet Advance/SILive.com to express his frustration over the lack of information regarding his order, which he placed in the fall of 2023.

Monopoli ordered an official trash bin from the NYC Department of Sanitation on October 23, 2023. He was informed the bins would soon be required for all residents as part of a new sanitation policy aimed at improving waste management in the city. After he called to check on his order in November, he was assured it would be delivered by the end of that month. However, as December drew to a close, Monopoli still had not received the bin.

In a bid for answers, Monopoli attempted to reach the city’s call center multiple times but found it non-operational. “I don’t know why I can’t find out about my garbage pail, or get the money that’s due to me,” he stated, highlighting the difficulty many residents face in accessing customer service.

While the NYC Bins webpage remains accessible, it now contains a notice indicating that online ordering and the call center are temporarily unavailable. The message advises residents that select NYC bins are available at all Home Depot locations. Monopoli expressed concern that he was not alone in experiencing issues, as he was informed by a worker at the local Sanitation Department garage that other residents have similarly inquired about missing deliveries.

“The gentleman I spoke to said, ‘You know what? You’re not the first person who called about this,’” Monopoli recounted. He was also told that the internal system did not provide any information regarding his order, indicating a broader issue with the program’s management.

Without clarity on the situation, Monopoli speculated that his bin was never delivered. He noted that he did not receive the School Tax Relief rebate that other homeowners received after purchasing a bin, leading him to conclude that his order may have been lost. “If there’s no refund check, that’s pretty much a good sign that the trash can was never dropped off,” he explained.

After unsuccessfully attempting to contact the manufacturer, Otto, for a refund, Monopoli’s frustration has only grown. “I don’t want to call [for a refund] if the can is going to come next week, but there’s no way to find out any information. It’s completely ridiculous,” he added.

In response to Monopoli’s concerns, a spokesperson for the Department of Sanitation acknowledged the situation, stating that the vendor would issue a full refund to Monopoli. The spokesperson clarified that the call center was not permanently closed but was temporarily offline and assured that efforts were underway to restore operations.

The new trash bin requirements were introduced under the administration of former Mayor Eric Adams, who initiated changes to sanitation policies to combat the persistent issue of rats in urban areas. The regulations mandate that all trash containers must be 55 gallons or smaller and equipped with secure lids. The city has partnered with Otto, a North Carolina-based company, to provide bins that feature latching lids, wheels, and a ten-year warranty. Full compliance with the new bin requirements will not take effect until June 2026, allowing residents of smaller buildings to continue using any bin with secure lids until that date.

As Monopoli continues to seek answers regarding his missing trash bin, the situation serves as a reminder of the challenges residents face when navigating city services during periods of operational disruption.
