United Way Gala Raises $270,000, Honors Community Leaders
The United Way of St. Johns and Putnam Counties successfully raised approximately $270,000 during its ninth annual Givers Gala. This event, held on [insert date], not only generated significant funds but also honored local community leaders for their exceptional contributions.
Proceeds from the gala will support the United Way’s initiatives in four key areas: healthy community, educational opportunity, community resiliency, and financial security. These areas reflect the organization’s commitment to improving lives and strengthening the community.
Honoring Local Leaders
At the gala, two distinguished individuals received honors for their impactful work. Theresa Odom, manager of kitchen operations at Bread of Life Palatka, was presented with the Nancy Burns Trailblazer Award. Known for her pioneering role, Odom was Putnam County’s first female patrol officer and dedicated over 30 years to law enforcement before transitioning to community service. In 2019, she began preparing meals at Bread of Life and later emerged as a volunteer leader, revitalizing the struggling soup kitchen.
The Chair’s Award was bestowed upon William Dudley, chairman of the St. Johns County Veterans Council. A retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, Dudley devoted nearly 45 years to the aerospace industry. Following his retirement, he became a staunch advocate for veterans, contributing to initiatives such as the Veterans Treatment Court and the Veterans Village for formerly homeless veterans, as well as improving veteran access to healthcare.
Community Impact
The funds raised during the Givers Gala will enable the United Way to enhance its programs, which address crucial community needs. The organization’s focus areas aim to foster a healthier, more educated, and financially secure population within St. Johns and Putnam Counties.
Both Odom and Dudley exemplify the spirit of service that the United Way seeks to inspire. Their dedication to their respective causes showcases the positive impact that individuals can have on their communities.
By bringing together community members for a night of celebration and philanthropy, the United Way’s Givers Gala not only raised significant funds but also highlighted the importance of local leadership and commitment to community improvement. The event serves as a reminder of the vital role that organizations like the United Way play in fostering a sense of togetherness and shared responsibility among residents.
