America250PA Kicks Off Statewide Celebration Tour in Pennsylvania

America250PA has launched a statewide tour celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, beginning with events in Greene and Fayette counties on Saturday, March 15, 2024. This initiative seeks to engage residents across Pennsylvania by highlighting local contributions to the nation’s history, culminating in a significant celebration in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026.

The kickoff event in Greene County took place at the Greene County Courthouse in Waynesburg and marked the 35th stop on the tour, which aims to reach every county in Pennsylvania. “Our goal is to ensure that every county’s contributions to the stories of Pennsylvania and America are recognized,” said Cassandra Coleman, the executive director of America250PA. She has been preparing for this milestone for five years, gathering local histories and promoting events such as Waynesburg’s Rain Day.

Safety concerns due to an impending winter storm led to the cancellation of a scheduled ceremony in Washington County, as well as the subsequent events planned for Sunday. Coleman confirmed she would coordinate with Washington County to reschedule the event at a later date.

Last year, America250PA initiated a project unveiling replicas of the Liberty Bell, painted by local artists to reflect each county’s unique history. Greene County is planning its own Independence Day celebrations, which will tie into the America250PA events in Waynesburg and Carmichaels. Additionally, an event is scheduled at this year’s Greene County Fair, as confirmed by Jared Edgreen, chairman of the Greene County Board.

Greene County has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1796, when it was carved out from Washington County and named after Nathanael Greene, a prominent general in the Revolutionary War. Edgreen noted the county’s significance, stating, “We’re not called the Keystone State for nothing. We were a pivotal part of founding this nation, and it’s something to be proud of.”

During her remarks, state Treasurer Stacy Garrity drew parallels between Greene County and her home of Bradford County, emphasizing both regions’ agricultural heritage and their roles in powering the nation through natural resources. “Everywhere I go, I see hard-working families looking for opportunities for the next generation,” Garrity said, highlighting the shared values across communities in Pennsylvania.

America250PA is also rolling out various initiatives, including a scholarship program offering $250,000 to Pennsylvania high school seniors who will attend in-state colleges or universities for the 2026-27 academic year. Students can apply online until March 30, 2024. The organization will host regional concerts and a lecture series focused on significant people, events, and ideals that shaped Pennsylvania and the nation.

“This effort reaches into every county and every community,” Coleman stated. “No matter where you live in Pennsylvania, there is a place for you in this milestone: to learn, to serve, to reflect, but most importantly, to celebrate together.”

As Pennsylvania gears up for this momentous occasion, local leaders are eager to share their stories and contributions, ensuring that the state’s diverse history is recognized and celebrated on a national stage.
