California Governor Gavin Newsom has vocally criticized a newly announced oil trade deal involving the United States, Russia, and India. This agreement, confirmed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on March 6, 2024, aims to alleviate an ongoing oil shortage by allowing Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil that is currently stranded at sea.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Bessent highlighted the deal as a temporary measure. He stated, “President Trump’s energy agenda has resulted in oil and gas production reaching the highest levels ever recorded. To enable oil to keep flowing into the global market, the Treasury Department is issuing a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil.” He emphasized that this short-term action would not provide significant financial benefits to the Russian government, as it only pertains to oil already stranded offshore.

Newsom’s office responded swiftly, mocking both the deal and Trump’s administration. A post from the Governor’s press office read, “Trump waives the Russia oil ban! Putin’s good little boy,” accompanied by an edited image depicting Trump and Bessent with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The statement reflects Newsom’s broader criticism of Trump, particularly concerning the upcoming midterm elections.

During a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Newsom reiterated his belief that the Republican Party would face significant losses in the midterms, largely due to Trump’s unpopularity. He described Trump as “a historic president. Historically unpopular,” predicting that the former president would face substantial defeats in the elections.
