Incumbents Face Tough Battles in Texas Midterm Primaries
The first round of primary elections has revealed significant challenges for incumbents as they navigate a shifting political landscape. This is particularly evident in Texas, where two sitting members of Congress are headed to a runoff, and another has lost their position entirely. The outcomes of these primaries highlight the evolving dynamics in congressional races as candidates adapt to redrawn district maps and shifting voter sentiments.
Runoff Battles in Texas
In Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, Colin Allred is set for a runoff against Julie Johnson. Allred, a former member of the House, opted to pursue this seat after stepping back from a U.S. Senate campaign. Johnson, who won Allred’s previous seat in 2024, served six years in the Texas House. The runoff, scheduled for May 26, will determine who is favored to represent a Dallas-area district that leans Democratic.
The situation is equally competitive in Houston, where Democratic incumbents Al Green and Christian Menefee will face off in a runoff. This unusual contest arises from redistricting ordered by the Trump administration, which has reshaped electoral boundaries ahead of the midterms. Green, 78, switched to the newly defined 18th Congressional District after his previous district was altered to favor Republican candidates. Menefee, only recently sworn into Congress, won a special election to fill the remaining term of Sylvester Turner, who passed away last year.
Voter confusion has been a recurring theme, as some Houston residents have participated in three congressional elections within four months, due to the fluctuations in district lines. Green is known for his vocal opposition to former President Trump, having even filed articles of impeachment during Trump’s first term. This primary represents a generational shift among Democrats, as younger candidates push for new leadership within the party.
Surprising Losses and Shifting Alliances
In a notable upset, Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL, was defeated by Steve Toth in Texas’ 2nd Congressional District. Crenshaw, seeking his fifth term, was the only Texas Republican not to receive Trump’s endorsement leading into the primaries. His independent stance often put him at odds with the party’s hard right, which aggressively challenged his alignment with Trump’s agenda.
Toth, a state representative backed by Ted Cruz, capitalized on this division within the party. Following his victory, Toth stated, “This campaign has been a referendum on representatives who campaign one way and govern another, and the people have spoken.” Crenshaw, who lost his right eye in combat, had previously acknowledged the legitimacy of President Biden’s election win, a stance that alienated him from some conservative factions within his party.
This cycle of primaries underscores a broader trend within both parties, revealing that incumbents are not guaranteed safety in their positions. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the outcomes of these races will have implications for the upcoming November elections. The results indicate a potential shift in voter priorities, reflecting a desire for change among constituents.
The primaries in Texas serve as a critical early indicator of the challenges incumbents may face in the midterm elections, with both established politicians and newcomers vying for the trust of their constituents amid a rapidly changing political environment.
