Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths globally, making early detection critical. Humboldt County presents a unique challenge, facing a higher risk for lung cancer compared to many other regions. Approximately 17 percent of local residents smoke, significantly higher than the California average of 10 percent. Lung cancer is also the second most common cancer diagnosis at Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka’s Comprehensive Cancer Services.

The hospital’s Lung Cancer Screening Program has been designated as a Screening Center of Excellence by the Go2 Foundation. This recognition ensures that the program adheres to the highest national standards in patient safety, education, and follow-up care. Providence offers annual low-dose CT (LDCT) scans for adults who meet national screening guidelines.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for adults aged 50 to 80 who have a history of smoking equivalent to a 20-pack-year, including both current smokers and those who quit within the last 15 years. Each LDCT scan at Providence is meticulously reviewed by radiologists and assigned a Lung RADS score, which is a standardized system for determining the need for follow-up testing.

Should a scan reveal any suspicious findings, a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists in radiology, pulmonology, oncology, and surgery evaluates the results. A dedicated screening coordinator is available to assist patients with timely follow-up and support.

Oncology Nurse Navigator Stephonie Zwald commented on the program’s significance, stating, “I love this program. It has provided early identification for many patients and that has led to diagnoses at early stages, where a cure was achieved. Historically, this was rarely the case. That is why lung cancer screening should be done with any patient who qualifies. This program saves lives.”

To further enhance its diagnostic capabilities, Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka has introduced the Ion robotic bronchoscopy system. This advanced technology allows physicians to navigate deep into the lungs with remarkable precision, enabling biopsies of small or hard-to-reach nodules earlier than ever before.

Dr. Robert Young, a pulmonary and critical care physician with Providence Medical Group Humboldt Pulmonary, emphasized the importance of this advancement: “The Ion robot represents a major advancement in lung cancer diagnostics in Humboldt County. The precision allows us to safely reach and biopsy small nodules deep within the lung that were previously difficult to access. This means we can diagnose cancer earlier, reduce complications, and provide patients with answers faster, which is critical in guiding treatment decisions.”
