Remembering Morty Matz: A Century of Public Relations Mastery
Morty Matz, a prominent figure in the world of public relations, passed away just shy of his 101st birthday this past summer. Known for his sharp wit and unparalleled expertise, Matz spent decades shaping the reputation of his clients and the public relations industry itself. Friends and colleagues gathered in October 2023 to celebrate his life and contributions during a memorial service that reflected the diverse range of individuals he influenced throughout his career.
Matz’s legacy began as a former editor at the Daily News, where he transitioned into public relations and became a well-respected maven in the field. His friend Sam Roberts, a veteran journalist, recalled how Matz challenged perceptions. Introduced initially as a typical PR man, Matz quickly distinguished himself by prioritizing integrity and trust. “He was honest, reliable, responsive, funny, accessible, earnest, loyal (to a fault),” Roberts noted. His approach helped elevate the public perception of public relations, proving that the profession could be founded on trust and ethical behavior.
In a candid reflection, Matz stated in an interview with the Daily News in 2024, “I loved my background role as the go-to guy who knew where the bodies were buried (my clients buried some of them),” underscoring his unique position in navigating the often murky waters of reputation management.
The turnout at Matz’s memorial service was a testament to the impact he had across various sectors. From friends at the Cigar Inn to local food vendors at Sable’s, attendees represented the multitude of lives he touched. Nick Pileggi, an author and screenwriter, remarked, “He was trusted in a world where there’s very little trust,” highlighting how Matz earned the confidence of both reputable figures and those less scrupulous.
The hallmark of Matz’s career was his ability to create compelling narratives. George Shea, co-founder of Shea Communications and a collaborator on the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, shared anecdotes from his time working with Matz. He described Matz as a master pitchman who could turn any event into an opportunity for publicity. Shea recalled a formative experience at the hot dog eating contest, where Matz demonstrated that even an alleged cheating incident could be spun into a larger story, generating more media attention.
Shea emphasized Matz’s love for the media landscape, noting that he was always well-informed about every relevant topic. He carried a tote bag filled with newspapers and was constantly reading. “He knew every reporter, editor and television producer in New York City and used these connections to advance the efforts of his clients,” Shea said.
Matz’s enthusiasm for life extended beyond his professional achievements. He delighted in the pleasures of good food and great company, often sharing meals with clients and colleagues. His love for New York City was palpable, as was his joy in placing a successful story, regardless of its scale. “Morty was an enormously joyful and loving person,” Shea recalled.
Bob Brody, who worked under Matz from 1991 to 1994, reflected on the unique management style Matz employed. Known for his light touch, Matz eschewed formal memos, preferring instead to engage directly with his team. Brody recounted a memorable staff meeting where Matz opened with the question, “Which clients are we failing today?” This informal atmosphere fostered creativity and collaboration.
Brody also recounted Matz’s knack for navigating interpersonal relationships with ease. “He had a genius for surprises,” Brody shared, illustrating how Matz would often celebrate his employees’ achievements, reinforcing a culture of mutual respect and camaraderie. Even when addressing issues of absenteeism, Matz would cleverly steer conversations to convey his message without confrontation.
The bond Matz formed with those he worked with extended far beyond the workplace. Brody noted that their relationship evolved into a lasting friendship that continued for over three decades. “Morty was a sweetheart, and then some,” he said, highlighting the profound impact Matz had on his life and career.
As tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that Morty Matz’s legacy is one of integrity, creativity, and deep connections. His contributions to public relations and the lives he touched will not be forgotten. The impact he made, both personally and professionally, serves as a benchmark for future generations in the field.
