Rob Richardson Seeks Second Term on Frankfort City Commission

Rob Richardson is campaigning for a second term on the Frankfort Board of Commissioners, citing a desire to deepen his contributions to the community. After two years in office, he believes that his experience as an elected official has provided him with valuable insights into the complexities of city operations. “I am driven by the desire to improve our community’s lives and bring a common-sense approach to government,” he stated.

During his first term, Richardson highlights the commission’s ability to operate within budget while generating a surplus through responsible fiscal management. “This was a big priority of mine given the challenges of finding new revenue and identifying areas to make cuts,” he explained. He noted the acquisition of OpenGov, a platform that enhances the efficiency of the finance department, facilitating communication among city departments and improving revenue generation.

Key Achievements and Future Plans

Richardson also pointed to the ongoing construction of the Frankfort Fire Department Station 1, located on the former Pic-Pac property on West Second Street. This new facility is set to enhance the city’s fire and emergency medical services while providing first responders with modern technology and training. “This project will benefit local residents and strengthen our emergency response capabilities,” he remarked.

In addition to public safety, Richardson has supported significant infrastructure projects, particularly in the Paddocks development. He believes this development will contribute to long-term revenue growth for the city. “As it grows over the years, this development will enhance our financial stability,” he stated.

Reflecting on his experiences as an elected official, Richardson acknowledged the considerable time commitment required for the role, which extends beyond the bi-monthly meetings. He has maintained a weekly meeting with the city manager to discuss operational matters, agenda items, and strategies for growth. “Serving requires research, dedication, and the willingness to learn,” he noted.

Richardson’s background includes a Bachelor of Science in police administration from Eastern Kentucky University and a 23-year career with the Frankfort Police Department, where he rose to the rank of assistant police chief before retiring in 2017. Currently, he serves as a law enforcement liaison with the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police, working on legislative needs and facilitating communication between law enforcement agencies and state government.

Addressing Community Needs

Looking ahead, Richardson aims to prioritize the expansion of the city sewer system, which he believes will stimulate growth and economic development. He is also committed to enhancing public safety by ensuring that first responders receive adequate resources and training. “Maintaining our budget while identifying unnecessary expenses and prioritizing community needs is essential,” he emphasized.

Richardson is particularly invested in the development of a downtown convention and meeting center, which he believes will drive economic growth and complement ongoing renovations at the Capital Plaza Hotel. Additionally, he is focused on addressing the city’s housing shortage. “We have residentially zoned property on the west side of Frankfort that I am actively seeking to develop,” he stated. He recognizes that an increase in employment opportunities necessitates adequate housing to retain the workforce.

Another area of interest for Richardson is riverfront development, which he sees as a potential avenue for enhancing tourism and recreational opportunities.

Outside his professional commitments, Richardson enjoys family life with his wife, Kim, and their three daughters: Kolby, 29; Lexie, 28; and Maggie, 21. He also has a beagle-boxer named Axel. “It has been a pleasure serving on the Frankfort city commission for the past year. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my community,” he concluded. Richardson is eager to continue his service and hopes to secure re-election for a second term on the commission.
