Senator Gallego Critiques GOP on Health Care and Shutdown Crisis

In response to a question about ensuring continued funding for SNAP, Gallego stated, “I think so. Yesterday we actually proposed two bills that would take care of all government employees, as well as contractors that are not being paid right now.” He emphasized the importance of equitable treatment for federal employees, asserting, “We’re not going to give the power to the president to pick and choose to pay the federal employees that he likes.”

Gallego highlighted the potential consequences of the Republican plan, which could result in health care premiums nearly doubling starting on November 1. He detailed how families in Arizona could see their insurance costs increase by approximately $3,400 annually, which translates to an additional $760 per month. “In Arizona, the average family of four is going to have their insurance rates doubled,” he noted, pointing to alarming figures that could severely impact household budgets.

The senator also criticized key Republican figures, including Senate Majority Whip John Thune and former President Donald Trump, for their perceived lack of leadership during this crisis. “What we’re looking at when it comes to true leadership coming from Thune, and the lack of leadership coming from Donald Trump, we don’t see anything,” Gallego commented. He further expressed concern about Representative Mike Johnson, who he claimed has “just absolutely disappeared,” hindering Congress’s ability to respond effectively to pressing issues.

Gallego’s objectives are clear: he aims to advocate for lower insurance premiums while seeking bipartisan collaboration to resolve the government shutdown. “All we want is two things. Number one, keeping insurance premiums very low for as many Americans as possible. And number two, having a good deal when it comes to reopening the government,” he explained.
