South Korean Opposition Party Leader Apologizes for Martial Law Incident

The leader of South Korea’s main opposition party, the People Power Party (PPP), has issued a formal apology regarding the brief declaration of martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol last year. During a press conference on January 7, 2025, Chairman Jang Dong-hyeok sought to distance the party from the impeached ex-leader, emphasizing the need for significant reforms as the PPP prepares for local elections in June.

Jang addressed the controversial martial law declaration, which took place on December 3, 2024, stating, “The emergency martial law was a wrongful measure that did not fit the situation.” He acknowledged the confusion and distress it caused among citizens and expressed deep regret for the impact on party members committed to upholding the constitutional order of liberal democracy. “We bear a heavy responsibility for this episode,” he added, highlighting the party’s failure in its governing role.

Following the declaration, Jang, alongside 17 other PPP lawmakers, moved quickly to the National Assembly, where they voted down the decree within hours. Reflecting on this event, Jang stated, “I gravely acknowledge that responsibility and offer my deepest apology to the people.”

Change to Win Initiative Unveiled

As part of an effort to move forward, Jang unveiled a new initiative called “Change to Win,” aimed at revitalizing the party. The initiative emphasizes youth participation, expert-driven policymaking, and expanded outreach to the public. Proposed measures include mandatory youth nominations for upcoming local elections and the establishment of new platforms to recruit outside policy experts. Additionally, standing committees focused on labor, social welfare, and generational issues are planned.

This announcement comes less than five months before the nationwide local elections, scheduled for June 1, 2025. The PPP aims to reestablish itself as a credible alternative to the administration of President Lee Jae Myung, who won the presidency in June following Yoon’s impeachment.

Jang indicated a willingness to broaden the party’s political coalition, stating, “If they agree with the values of liberal democracy and share the will to stop the dictatorship of the Lee Jae Myung regime, we will open our hearts and join forces with anyone.” This marks a notable shift in the opposition’s strategy to unite against the current government’s perceived overreach.

Addressing Internal Reforms

The PPP plans to implement internal reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability within the party. Jang outlined proposals for stricter anti-corruption rules, centralized oversight of candidate nominations, and the potential renaming of the party. He suggested that past political turmoil, including the martial law incident and the impeachment of Yoon, should be resolved through judicial processes and historical analysis, urging the party to focus on restoring public trust.

“We will cross the river of martial law and impeachment and move toward the future,” Jang affirmed, positioning the PPP for a renewed focus on its constituents and the principles of democracy as it approaches the upcoming elections.

The developments signal a significant moment for the People Power Party, as it grapples with its past while striving to redefine its identity and regain the confidence of the South Korean electorate.
