Thousands Protest in Israel for Release of Hostage Ran Gvili

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Israel on March 3, 2024, demanding the return of the remains of the final hostage, Ran Gvili. The demonstration also served as a platform for opposition against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Gvili’s family called on U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Board of Peace member Jared Kushner to exert pressure on Hamas to facilitate the return of Gvili’s body.

Gvili’s family expressed frustration over the perceived misdirection of pressure. According to them, President Donald Trump stated earlier this week in Davos that Hamas is aware of the location of Gvili. They questioned why the focus of diplomatic efforts is not on Hamas. “The pressure should not be on the Israeli government to continue fulfilling its part of the deal while Hamas deceives the entire world and refuses to return the last hostage in accordance with the agreement it signed,” they were quoted as saying by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

The terms of the ceasefire stipulate that its second phase, which includes the disarmament of Gaza’s militant groups and the territory’s reconstruction, will only begin after all hostages, both alive and deceased, return to Israel. Despite this, Witkoff announced last week the initiation of Phase Two of Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, coinciding with the unveiling of the Board of Peace in Davos. This global body, chaired by Trump, was established to oversee the implementation of the truce terms and reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip.

Military Actions Amid Protests

On the same day as the protests, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that its Air Force conducted strikes against Palestinian militants in the northern Gaza Strip. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated that troops identified several terrorists who crossed the Yellow Line and posed an immediate threat by planting an explosive device. The military responded with airstrikes following this identification.

The IDF emphasized that its forces in the southern command remain deployed in compliance with the ceasefire agreement and will continue to take action against any immediate threats. Currently, Israeli troops control approximately 54 percent of the Gaza Strip, positioned east of the Yellow Line, which runs through the Palestinian territory.

Phase Two of the ceasefire agreement includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops on the condition that Gaza’s militant organizations disarm. The ongoing protests and military actions highlight the complexities surrounding the hostage situation and the broader conflict in the region.
