Beloved Community Member William Plant Passes Away at 83
William (Bill) Plant, a cherished member of the Redondo Beach community, passed away at the age of 83 in Torrance, California. His life journey began in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where he was born, before his service in the United States Coast Guard took him to various locations, including Newfoundland and the South Pacific.
Service and Love
During his time stationed at the Point Vicente Lighthouse in the spring of 1962, Bill met his future wife, Jeannine, while bodysurfing at Redondo Beach. Their encounter blossomed into a lasting romance, culminating in their marriage that December. Together, they spent 63 years as best friends and soulmates, building a life filled with love and shared experiences.
While Bill served on the small island of Ulithi, Jeannine took the initiative to purchase their forever home in South Redondo. Following eight years in the Coast Guard, Bill transitioned to a career with the Redondo Beach Police Department, where he dedicated nearly 30 years to serving and protecting his community.
A Life Well-Lived
Bill’s interests extended beyond his professional life. He took great pleasure in maintaining his home and cultivating a garden that attracted hummingbirds and monarch butterflies. Beyond gardening, he enjoyed reading and watching ocean wildlife from the Esplanade, but his greatest joy was found in his family, especially with Jeannine by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, and their three children: Nathan (with wife Jennifer), Adam (with wife Miki), and Sara (with husband Sam). He also leaves behind his sister, Virginia (with husband Richard), along with extended family and friends who cherished him deeply.
A private celebration of Bill’s life will be organized at a later date, allowing those who knew him to honor his memory in a meaningful way. His legacy of service and love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
