Once eradicated from this region, the bobcat has made a remarkable comeback over the last few decades. The Rhode Island Bobcat Project, spearheaded by researchers from the University of Rhode Island (URI) in collaboration with local partners, including the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island, has confirmed this trend. As of this winter, the project has logged over 1,000 sightings, indicating a thriving population that is capturing public interest.

This initiative aims to track bobcat movements, habitat use, and population dynamics. According to URI Assistant Professor of Quantitative Ecology, Kathleen Carroll, and Ph.D. student Christopher Hickling, the increasing presence of bobcats in southern New England is encouraging. They note that public engagement and excitement about these animals have been substantial, further enhancing the project’s effectiveness.

The data collected from public sightings, alongside information from camera traps and GPS radiocollars, will provide essential insights into where bobcats rest, hunt, and travel. This information is vital for developing land management strategies that balance human activity with wildlife conservation needs. Carroll remarked, “Bobcats in this area appear very tolerant of people compared to bobcats in other regions.”

Understanding Bobcat Behavior and Public Engagement

The URI team has observed that bobcats in southern New England often exhibit behaviors that indicate a level of comfort with human presence. Carroll noted that, unlike their counterparts in less populated areas, local bobcats are frequently seen traversing residential driveways during nighttime hours. This behavior is particularly interesting given the region’s high population density.

Carroll expressed her satisfaction with the public’s growing interest in bobcats, stating, “We are happy people are excited about seeing bobcats and interested in their importance for biodiversity.” The reports received from the community will enable the research team to better support and manage bobcat populations in the area.

Looking ahead to the spring, the researchers are preparing for an increase in bobcat activity. Female bobcats typically give birth to litters of two to four kittens during this season. They establish dens in secluded areas, away from human disturbance. Residents who suspect the presence of a bobcat den on their property are encouraged to contact the research team for guidance.

The URI team has developed a unique naming convention for the bobcats they collar and release. Each cat is assigned a formal identifier, such as B03M or B11F, but they also receive memorable names inspired by native birds, including Osprey, Falcon, and Plover. This creative approach not only organizes their research but also fosters a connection between the animals and the local community.

Bobcats have become a focal point of local wildlife interest due to their charismatic nature and resemblance to domestic cats.
