Community Mourns the Passing of Jack Brown, 92, in San Pedro

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, in San Pedro, California, surrounded by family. His life was marked by rich experiences, contributions to his community, and a deep love for his family.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack’s early years were filled with fond memories. He spent much of his childhood in San Pedro, where he would catch tadpoles at Averill Park and sell newspapers to sailors arriving in port. He began his working life as one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates and contributed to the war effort as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II, joining his father in this important role.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School, where he took a ferry across the harbor before the Vincent Thomas Bridge was constructed. His high school years were marked by athletic achievement, particularly in track and field, where he earned numerous accolades as a distance runner. He continued his passion for running in college while pursuing a degree in Drafting.

Upon graduating, Jack began his career at Northrop Grumman. Later, he took the bold step of starting his own business, employing friends and colleagues he had met throughout his life. In 1969, Jack met his future wife, Rita Cebula, and they were married on April 17, 1971. Together, they welcomed two children, Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975.

Throughout his life, Jack remained deeply involved in his community and church. Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity, where both were active members. Jack enjoyed family vacations and had a range of hobbies, including gardening, DIY projects, and coin collecting. He was known for his unique sense of humor and started each day with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Welsh, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church. Following the mass, burial will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
